The Hollywoodbets Durban 10km announces R100 000 injection to the prize purse.
The race organisers of the Hollywoodbets Durban 10km announced on Friday, 20 September 2024, that an additional R100 000 has been injected to the prize purse which will be split for any male or female runner who breaks the South African 10km record during the race on Sunday, 29 September. This bonus is in addition to the R37 500 prize money for the first runner home, meaning that the record-breaker could walk away with an additional R50,000.00 on top of their winnings, with a pay day of R87 500.
This announcement adds excitement to an already star-studded race, which boasts a lineup of international athletes expected to push the pace, potentially leading South African runners to break or come close to the national record. Among the male contenders are Stephen Mokoka, Elroy Gelant, Thabang Mosiako, Mathews Leeto, and Kabelo Mulaudzi, all of whom are poised to deliver a race for the history books.
On the women’s side, defending champion Cian Oldknow will be aiming to maintain her top form against familiar opposition Tadu Nare, who is no stranger to the Durban roads. They will also face tough competition from speedster Tayla Kavanagh, Neheng Khatala and the formidable Cacisile Sosibo, who is known for her prowess on the road.
“The Hollywoodbets Durban 10km is one of South Africa’s most financially rewarding 10km races. In addition to the increased prize money, the R50 000 incentive for breaking the South African record whether male or female will be a fitting reward for such an outstanding performance. This record bonus will motivate athletes to take advantage of the fast Durban course and aim for the national records of 27:35 for men, set by Precious Mashele in 2023, and 31:12 for women, set by Glenrose Xaba in July this year,” said Hollywood Athletics Club Manager, Manfred Seidler.
With the standard of 10km racing in both the men’s and women’s fields improving over the last two years, this incentive will drive athletes to push boundaries and potentially walk away with a significant payday, Seidler continues to add.
This exciting opportunity will continue in Johannesburg on Saturday, 15 November 2024, when the race makes its debut in the City of Gold, with plans to expand to various provinces, spreading the Purple Team spirit nationwide.
